Outcomes
Quality is a top priority at Select Medical. Throughout our hospitals, we are focused on providing high-quality and compassionate care to our medically complex and critically ill patients. Since 1996, Select Medical has established a consistent record of regulatory compliance and excellent patient outcomes.
Hallmarks of our commitment to quality include:
- Structured Quality, Infection Control and Safety plans that contribute to the ability to benchmark hospital performance with both internal and national benchmarks
- Participation in an outcomes database (TR: Thomson Reuters)
- Participation in Infection Control Database (NHSN: National Health Safety Network, the reporting arm of the Center for Disease Control)
- Continuous measuring, monitoring and reporting on outcomes, regulatory compliance, patient safety, infection control, utilization management, patient satisfaction and customer loyalty through QualMax®, a comprehensive performance improvement system
Pulmonary/Ventilator Weaning Program
Select's Pulmonary/Ventilator Weaning program is designed to wean medically complex patients who require continued mechanical ventilation. We successfully wean three-quarters of our patients on average, all of whom had previously failed to wean in a traditional hospital.
The chart below illustrates Select's excellence in preventing or reducing the rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia as compared to the NHSN benchmark.
* Current benchmark as reported in the American Journal of Infection Control, December 2009
(Rate = Number of infections per 1,000 device days)
Many Select patients are admitted following 21- to 30-day stays in a general acute care hospital's ICU, during which they were not able to be weaned from mechanical ventilation. As demonstrated in the chart below, Select is able to wean many of these patients in less than two weeks on average.

Patient Satisfaction
Nearly nine out of every ten patients are satisfied with Select and would recommend Select.
Patient outcomes serve as one important set of measures regarding the quality of our care and services. Similarly, the satisfaction of our patients is a key indicator of how well we meet their needs and individual goals. In an effort to continually exceed patient expectations, Select voluntarily and proactively adopted a CMS patient satisfaction survey, one in which all general acute care hospitals are required to participate.
This graph demonstrates an extremely high rate of patient satisfaction with our responsiveness to their needs, as indicated by our Call Light response and by the effective and responsible management of pain levels so patients can focus on healing and recovery.

Infection Control
Infection control is a major area of focus for Select LTAC hospitals. Our patients come to us in fragile conditions with compromised immune systems. Many are admitted to our hospitals with serious infections that we must effectively manage in order for them to begin the recovery process.
The chart below illustrates Select's excellence in preventing or reducing the rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia as compared to the NHSN benchmark.
(Rate = Number of infections per 1,000 device days)
In terms of catheter-related urinary tract infections (UTI), Select has a comparably lower infection rate based upon a national benchmark established by NHSN.
(Rate = Number of infections per 1,000 device days)
* Current benchmark as reported in the American Journal of Infection Control, December 2009

Other Quality Indicators
Due to the fragile nature of our patients, many are admitted to Select hospitals with complex or non-healing wounds. The Select staff is very successful in wound care management and utilizes advanced therapy technologies to promote healing. We are proud of our expertise and effectiveness.
The following chart shows the incidence of hospital-acquired wounds in our patient population. Patients in Select hospitals have a very low rate of acquiring pressure wounds as evidenced by the number of acquired wounds per 1,000 patient days. Prevention remains a focus of our care.
The next chart shows Select's average PUSH (Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing) score. Select's -6.39 PUSH score demonstrates its high success rate. With PUSH scores, the more negative the score, the greater success with healing the wound. A score of zero indicates no healing. Select's -6.39 score indicates significant healing as wounds continue to get progressively smaller in scope.
